Set of rules
Rules for all the participants:

Knife changes:
  • It will be authorized only if the knife is visibly damaged, broken or bend; or if the threads are cut up to
the point the knife is loosen. Each team will be given 2 minutes for changing knife and thread. Time
will begin immediately after the authorization of this change and the reception of the new knife, before
    the fifth minute of fighting.
  • Once arriving at the fifth minute, if they have not changed the knife, the change will be mandatory for
    both teams, regardless cocks’ conditions.
  • There will be an extraordinary change if there was already a previous one, only if the knife blade is
visibly damaged, broken or bend; or if the knife legs are broken up to the point the knife is loosen.
  • Before beginning the fight, each team will count on an additional knife for a possible change, the one
the Referee will put in a transparent container, with red and green signs. This bowl will be kept by
one of the Referees, in front of the public.
  • While their fight is developing, we ask teams to have at hand their knives case and other items they
    may need.
  • Once the fight has ended, whatever it may be the result, it is an obligation of every participant team to
cover their cock’s knife, and remove it from the bird outside (beside) the ring.
  • It will no be authorized any change to a team whose cock has run away. In this case, the team will
have to prove and break the count in order to be granted that right.

A team may win, lose or be tied due to the following:

  • Because of dead cock.
  • If a cock puts its peak on the floor during the center line tests before counting 10 seconds.
  • If the cock runs away. We understand that when a cocks gives tail, leaving the fight; or when it refuses
to fight (in case of cocks are disabled to move).

Runaway cock test:

  1. The cocks are taken to the center lines to continue fighting. If the supposed runaway cock clearly
shows this situation (screaming or crowing, if it begins running or goes away), the fight will be ruled
    immediately.
  2. If there is any doubt about the cock has or not run away, the Referee will ask for the “mona” (sparring)
or prove above, cock against cock. If the cock is dead, the Referee has the authority either to open its
neck feathers to simulate a fight, or to ask for the “mona”.
Anyway, if the handler asks for the prove above, or the Referee uses “cock against cock” or the
“mona”, if the supposed runaway cock shows signs to continue fighting, the fight will go on in normal
    conditions.

We insist that our priority is all attendants’ integrity, that is why, under any circumstances, if an armed
cock tends to get out of the ring, and the people involved (handler and referees) can help it, this will
happen without any protest, and the cock will return to fight immediately.

We remind you that a dead cock or one that has put its peak on the floor defeats a runaway one.
Please, do not mistake a bored or indifferent cock for a runaway one.

The only count will not be broken at arriving at even time, because a cock dies or puts its peak on the
floor, is when it runs away. Then, the fight will not be ruled, until the runaway cock performs the test;
only then the decision will be made.

Remember, you may count on the dead cock test, and it may be used only if the handler asks for it.

Dead cock test: When is it authorized?

  1. The Referee verifies if this request proceeds (that is, if the requester has a cock alive and its
opponent, a dead one). If both cocks are dead, the fight will be decided as even or they will continue
    on the floor.
  2. It is not mandatory that the dead cock’s peak goes to the ground, for it may be recovering from a
hypovolemic shock, or it may be disoriented or blind. If it gives signs of being alive, fight will go on.
  3. If the cock managed by the handler who asked for the test above dies when this is granted, fight will
be declared as even, because it is not fair that, just because he asked first for such a test, he would be
granted the victory, since both cocks are technically dead.

We understand by “test or fight”: chase, pursue, fight, peck, bite the opponent or open its neck
feathers, in a natural way, in front of it; move forward facing its opponent.

We understand by “dead cock”: a cock whose body is loosen or stiff, making uncoordinated
movements, rasping breath or death, or if it does not give any sign of life to continue fighting.

In the center lines there is not protection count (counting of 1, 2, or 3).

Decision by contempt of rules
Every handler in the center lines will loose his cock with only one hand, taking it from the back
feathers and with the legs on the line. They will release at the order of “release or free”, given by the
referee without waiting for any count; if he does not do so, the fight may be ruled without any chance
of compliant. Once the Referee orders to loosen the cock, the handlers must not slapping nor
stimulate the cock, nor leaving the hand in front of his cock, since the count of 10 seconds will not be
broken, and the cocks will have to fight naturally.

Anyway, in the center lines tests, the handler will have to put the cock with its peak in a horizontal
way, looking to the opponent cock. In case the handler evidently puts his cock’s peak in a vertical
way, looking to the lamps of the center of the ring, the fight may be ruled against him, without any
possibility of complaint

The handler’s duty is to introduce his cock on the lines, with its peak in a horizontal position when
releasing the bird; if at freeing the cock naturally, it rise its peak, given a certain kind of injuries or
because of rigor mortis, this will be considered as something legal and the counting will go on.

The count of 10 seconds will begin when both handlers have removed their hands from their cocks. If
they do not do so, the fight may be ruled by rebelliousness. The handler is there to help his cock as
humanely as possible, so, if he is surprised bothering his cock with an intention of hurting or killing it,
the fight will be ruled without any chance of complaint.

The handlers could help their cocks only with their saliva and their hands, when time allows it (during
the 15 seconds of help). During the fight, they cannot touch the knives, just in the raisings.

It is strictly forbidden that the handler takes liquids, ice or any other substance to his mouth during the
fight. If any handler disrespects this disposition, his cock will be punished; if he re-offend, he will not
be able to continue releasing, until the tournament ending. If his re-offense has an influence on the
fight result, this will be decided against him.

If the cock is inside the cockpit, it is forbidden to give it substances such as pills, capsules, drops,
powder, injections, cream or any other forbidden substance. The team that does so, and their actions
may be proved, will lose the fight.

Even results
Teams are tied because:

  • Both cocks die or run away from fight simultaneously.
  • Both handlers keep back or do not release their cocks when the Referee tells them so, in the center
    lines tests.

The cock that has been ringed and registered for the tournament will play in whatever conditions it
may be, and only the Referees will be able to cut and remove the register ring. The team that breaks
the register ring or substitute a ringed cock, will lose the fight.

The opposite team will have to win the points on the ground, fighting their cock. The main concern is
to protect teams, avoiding “default” fights, so the Enterprise or the participant teams will be able to
restore the changed or damaged cocks, and this fight will be celebrated as soon as possible, but
always before the final fight.

Regulations
Obedience to order and paying attention are central factors in this kind of events. As we are conscious
of the importance of time, it is necessary that the arming of cocks will take place in an area attached to
the cockpit. You, as a participant, will know your fight turn and will have to get to this area previously.
You will not be allowed to arm your cock inside the ring. There will be an exclusive referee
designated to the area devoted to tie cocks. Only under certain circumstances (as the round change
or others that the Enterprise needs) this process could be done inside the ring.

It is very important to mention that will be accepted only two entries at most, that is to guarantee that
the same team will not fight against itself in any of the rounds or in the final Derby.

The Enterprise reserves the right to avoid confrontations among some of the teams, due to the fact
that one team impulses another.

The main aim of this event is continuity in fights. That is the reason why the organizers reserve the
right to make all the adjustments required (above all, in the fights roll), so that we may achieve this
goal.

General public
Please, remember we consider all of you as a model of good manners, professionalism and chivalry
in gamefowl atmosphere. Thus, we all embrace legality, honesty and transparence, as a honorable
and quality place, in all aspects.

If all participants appeal to intelligence as a rule, we will agree that, above all, we must prevent, that is
why we need to mention the following points:
All people, without any exemption, will be checked by our security members at arriving at the event,
as many times as it is necessary, both person and belongings which will be used during the event.
Those who do not accept this measure will be invited to leave (if the non conformists are teams as a
whole, we will count on extra participant teams and the Enterprise would take proper steps). Any kind
of measure may affect cocks, trying to benefit another team, deserve expulsion from this event. Also,
and with no exemption, we will forbid the access to subsequent events to handler, personal and
teams who have shown bad behavior. This same measure will be taken towards teams that,
intentionally, delay the event
.

Also, do try to take care of your personal aspect and clothes. Please, rise to the occasion and honor
this event.

Tournament procedure and development
a) Draw

  • There are 18 Mexican and 18 American teams; that is, 14 different ways of facing each other without
repeating a rival nor competing among fellow countrymen. These 14 options will be specified en 14
cards, which will be placed at the center of the ring. Some representatives from the participating
teams will ask for these cards checking. Then, cards will be put into envelops, signed and sealed.
Three of these cards will be used on the first day, and the other ones will be used on the second. On
the third day of competition, the final, they will turn to bingo.

b) Group assignment

  • The first group will be integrated by those teams numbered from 1 to 18, and the second one, by the
    rest of them (18-36).
  • The first group is a fixed one, so teams 1-18 will always keep their fighting turns, unlike teams 18-36,
whose turns will depend on the specific team of group 1 they will have to face.
  • The privilege of belonging to group 1 will be given to the country that won the last Mexico-United
States Derby, or Golden Rooster Tournament; that is to say, the winner of the last Mexico-USA will be
given the numbers 1-18, in the first (fixed) group.

c) Team number assignment

  • The number assignment (1-18, in group 1; and 18-36 in group 2) will be done by draw, according to
bingo, at the beginning of the event.

d) Score

  • All teams will play their first six fights during the first two days (Friday and Saturday), but the event
celebrated on Sunday will be restricted to only those with real possibilities of winning, so that the
minimum score required to pass to the 7th round is as follows:
  • If the best team(s) counts 11-12 points, then the minimum score required will be 6 points.
  • If the best team(s) counts 9-10 points, then the minimum score required will be 5 points.
  • If the best team(s) counts 7-8 points, then the minimum score required will be 4 points.
  • If the best team(s) counts 5-6 points, then the minimum score required will be 2 points.
  • Our organization reserves the right of allowing a lesser-point team to pass to the 7th round, even if it
does not count on the number of points we established above, provided that they consider there are
    conditions for that.

e) Score protection

  • In order to avoid any kind of collusion among low scored teams and those with better possibilities of
winning, from the 7th round on, the first fights will be fought only by teams with a lesser number of
points. If there is any “joker”, it will take part in the first fight. For the rest of the teams, organizers will
proceed according to the bingo results.

f) Passing to the 9th round

  • The 9th round will be fought only by those teams with possibilities of achieving the first three places.
